The Most Beautiful of All Turbos? The 997.2 Facelift and the Turbo Family Tree
From the 930 to the 992: where the 997.2 Turbo stands in the family tree – and why many consider it the most beautiful water-cooled Turbo of all.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" – and yet in Porsche circles you hear the same line remarkably often: the 997.2 Turbo is the most beautiful of all Turbos. That is and remains a matter of taste. But it's a well-founded one. Let's take a look at the family – and at what the facelift really changed.
The Turbo family tree at a glance
The 911 Turbo has existed since 1974/75. Seven generations have taken it from the tail-happy "widow-maker" to the all-wheel-drive everyday supercar:123
| Generation | Years (approx.) | Engine / output | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 930 (3.0) | 1974/75–1977 | 3.0 L turbo, 260 hp | First series 911 Turbo, 4-speed |
| 930 (3.3) | 1977–1989 | 3.3 L turbo, 300 hp | Intercooler, later 5-speed |
| 964 Turbo | 1990–1994 | 3.3 / 3.6 L, 320–360 hp | ABS & power steering, still rear-wheel drive |
| 993 Turbo | 1995–1998 | 3.6 L biturbo, 408 hp | First Turbo with all-wheel drive, last air-cooled |
| 996 Turbo | 2000–2005 | 3.6 L biturbo, 420 hp | First water-cooled (Mezger), first-ever "Turbo S" |
| 997.1 Turbo | 2006–2009 | 3.6 L biturbo (Mezger), 480 hp | First petrol engine with VTG, last Mezger manual |
| 997.2 Turbo | 2009–2012 | 3.8 L biturbo, 500 hp, DFI | First Turbo with direct injection; last with a manual |
| 991 Turbo | 2013–2019 | 3.8 L, 520/540 hp | Rear-axle steering; PDK only from here |
| 992 Turbo | 2020– | 3.8 L, from 580 hp | Current, still PDK-only |
In this lineup the 997.2 occupies a special position: it's the most technically mature stage of the 997 series and at the same time the last Turbo with a manual. Two superlatives in one car.
What the facelift really changed
The update from the 997.1 to the 997.2 was deliberately evolutionary – "more tweak than redesign," because the 997.1 looks were already considered very successful.4 The most important visual changes on the Turbo:5
Front:
- LED daytime running lights – on the Turbo integrated into the fog lamps (four bright LEDs per side). The most distinctive recognition feature of the facelift.
- Newly sculpted front apron with larger air intakes – the front looks a touch "wider" and more modern.
Rear:
- Newly drawn LED taillights with a different light signature.
- Subtly revised rear apron.
Details:
- Newly designed exterior mirrors.
- Fresh wheel designs.
Under the skin lies the real revolution, of course – the new DFI engine and PDK – but visually the facelift is exactly the kind of update that ages like fine wine: restrained, precise, without any faddish exaggeration.
Why this Turbo in particular has so many fans
Three things come together that explain the "most beautiful Turbo" verdict:
- Classic 997 proportions. The 997 series is seen by many as a return to the "pure" 911 form after the polarizing 996 generation – compact, muscular, timeless.
- Modern lighting tech without a break. The LED signature looks modern without overpowering the line – unlike some later, larger 911s.
- The manual. For many, part of the "most beautiful Turbo" is also the most beautiful driving experience – and that, simply, is the one with three pedals.
Whether the 997.2 is objectively the most beautiful, no one will decide. But it's unquestionably one of the most coveted – and in the end that's the more honest currency. Beauty that ages like fine wine, paired with the scarcity of the last manual Turbo: that's exactly the mix from which lasting desirability – and rising values – emerge. Whoever falls in love with this shape isn't falling for a passing fashion, but for a future classic.
